1. Visit the Baltic

The Baltic is a very famous landmark of the North East. It’s the biggest art gallery of its kind in the world and with regular exhibitions every month, no two visits here are the same.

With work from artists from all around the world as well as local artists on display here, you get to experience a wealth of different contemporary art. Exhibitions rotate regularly and they always make sure to leave an impression.

Make sure to set aside a couple hours when you come here, as you’re sure to get lost as you explore each exhibition. Also, remember to head out onto the viewing platform to snap a picture over the Tyne River for what is surely the best view over Newcastle!

2. Grab a Bite to Eat at Fat Hippo

Got a hankering for a tasty, juicy burger? If so, the best place for it is a trip to Fat Hippo. With a branch in Jesmond, Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle City Centre, you’ll find one easily.

The Fat Hippo restaurants are so cosy you’ll never want to leave! If you’re planning in coming here in the evening, try to book ahead or you might not be able to get a table.

Their beef burgers come served in a soft brioche bun and topped with goodies such as bacon, cheese and onion rings. They’re served with tasty hand cut fries too. They even have veggie and vegan options which are just as tasty so nobody needs to miss out!

3. Go Shopping in Eldon Square

In the city centre you’ll find Eldon Square, a large shopping centre with a huge range of stores from clothing to technology to beauty and more. It features names such as Dorothy Perkins, Hollister, Apple etc, so you’re never far from your favourite brands.

With big department stores like John Lewis and Fenwick, there are lots of great options if you want to splash out a little. All that shopping works up an appetite, so make sure to pop into the recently refurbished food hall where you can find something to suit all tastes and budgets.

4. Laugh Your Night Away at The Stand Comedy Club

The Stand Comedy Club is tucked in an alley between Bigg Market and Grey Street and offers one of the best and cheapest nights in Newcastle.

The best night to go there is on a Wednesday for their Red Raw nights. It’s only £3.00 per ticket and you get to watch around 10 acts perform on stage. It’s a very popular venue for students and no matter how broke you are, it’s always a great evening.

5. Grab a Coffee at Flat Caps

Flat Caps is one of the best places to get down to some work. You’ll find plenty of other students and young professionals typing away on their laptops while sipping a flat white and eating avo on toast.

This place specialises in vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options so there’s something for everyone. They serve up amazing coffee and the decor makes a very cosy atmosphere.

Flat Caps is one of the few coffee shops in town open past 5pm and actually stays open till 7pm. So if you need to do some late evening work or want to get a coffee later in the day, this is the place to go.

6. Explore the North East Coast

One of the most beautiful parts of the North East is the amazing coastline. On the Metro you can go right from the bustling city centre to the tranquil seaside.

Begin with a trip over to Tynemouth, where on the weekend so you can catch the famous market held right on the platforms of the Metro station. Grab some of the famous fish and chips from Marshalls and take them along to the seafront where you’ll get a gorgeous view over Tynemouth Priory and the sandy shores. Finish by walking along to Whitley Bay and exploring the shops and bars, then end the day with a pint at Left Luggage Room at the Monkseaton Metro Station.

7. Check Out Ouseburn

The best part about Ouseburn is that it’s right in the city of Newcastle, you only have to travel to Manors or Byker to get there. There’s so many great bars and cafes that you must visit.

Head to some of the best bars around such as The Cluny and The Ship. It’s also home to the Seven Stories museum of children’s literature, and the Biscuit Factory is close by as well.

Ouseburn is an area that seems hidden away but is really one of the most popular and well-loved spots in town. Your student accommodation won’t be too far from it or will at least be within close transport links to get you there.

8. Catch a Film at Tyneside Cinema

Tyneside Cinema is a lot more than just a cinema. It opened in 1937 and has shown a huge range of contemporary and diverse artistic programmes.

It’s the place to experience independent cinema and it also has an art exhibition space which showcases local art.

Tyneside cinema also hosts three bars / cafes that serve up a storm of great food and drinks, so even if you’re just there for a snack you’ll enjoy this venue!
