Being in a relationship whilst studying abroad can be incredibly challenging, and a lot of people will tell you so. 

Many people will tell you that it is best to cut your losses and end the relationship, that it will probably fall apart with so much distance between you. But is being in a relationship whilst studying abroad really that bad, or that difficult to maintain for that matter? 

There may just be a way to make sure that your relationship not only survives but thrives too. Read on for our guide on how to cope and maintain being in a relationship while studying abroad.

Be open to change

You’re going to make a massive change in your life, that will affect the both of you, make sure that you are both realistic about what kinds of changes there are going to be in your relationship. If you get it right, the space in between the both of you will not matter to one another.

Keep busy

Make sure you try and keep your mind off being away from your partner by keeping yourself busy. Make new friends, join new sports and social clubs, and throw yourself into your studies to keep your mind busy. Just remember to make sure that you encourage your other half to do the same too!

Schedule time to talk to one another

This might be tricky, as you could be living across different time zones, but it’s vital that you both make enough time for one another. Communication is the key to any relationship, and even more so when you’re living so far apart. Make sure you keep in contact on a regular basis, to avoid any upset

Send each other letters and gifts

Make sure you let one another that you care about them and that you are thinking about them by sending each other gifts. It doesn’t have to be much, and you have the added benefit of sending them something from your new home. It might be a bit old fashioned, but it is definitely romantic to send each other letters.
