Looking at heating student accommodation but your flatmates disagree with you? Heres our guide to not fall out with flatmates over heating student accommodation

Shared living can be hard, even at the best of times. With the cold weather though, things can become even more difficult. If you’re not lucky enough to have your bills included with your rent, or live in your own flat, debates about the heating can go on for ages. Some of the biggest confrontations in shared housing can be over the heating.

Many people try to save money by having the heating on as little as they can. This can cause problems with the house they are living in, as well as affecting their own health and those around them. But say you are living with someone who doesn’t want to turn the heating on very much, what can you do

Read on for our guide on how to not fall out with your housemates over heating student accommodation.

Talk to them

The first thing you should do is talk to the housemate who is causing you the problem. Don’t go in all guns blazing as you’ll only cause an argument. Instead, try and have a calm and open conversation with them. They may not be willing to put the heating on due to financial worries, for example. Talk things out and see if you can find a solution going forward.

Get any major problems fixed by your landlord

Your landlord has a responsibility to provide liveable conditions for you to live in. If something major is not right, such as a broken door or faulty boiler, get on to your landlord and let them know. It is no good for anyone to be paying for a home that is cold through no fault of your own.

Keep your own room warm

Check out our article on how to keep your home warm this winter for more, but basically, wrap up warm and invest in lots of blankets and throws. Think about getting an electric heater for your own room, as well as any other cold spots in the house.

Bear in mind that your housemates might not be happy with you getting an electric heater and running up the bills. If you do really want an electric heater, talk you your housemate, and perhaps reassure them that you’ll not have it on all the time.
