Living with other students and the place is a mess? Read on to find out how to make a cleaning rota

Communal living requires everyone in a household to be able to work together and communicate in order for things to go smoothly. One of the main things people argue about in shared accommodation is cleaning. Specifically, who should clean what, and when, and what to do to make sure that everyone does their fair share of housework.

One of the easiest ways to keep everyone in check is to make a cleaning rota. A cleaning rota allows everyone to know what they need to do in order to keep their household clean, tidy and happy. But what is a cleaning rota, and what should you be putting on one? Read on for our guide on how to make a cleaning rota.

Decide what jobs need to be done

Look around your flat, specifically shared areas such as the living room, bathrooms and kitchen areas. Identify what needs to be done in each of these areas in order to keep things nice and tidy. For example, the bins will need emptying regularly.

Decide when these jobs should be done - and by who?

Some jobs around the house will not need to be done as frequently as others. You will probably only have to give the oven a deep clean every few months or so. Some jobs will need to be carried out regularly.

The bins will need taking out each week, and by a certain day too. You’ll also need to decide who is going to do what each week.

I would suggest assigning tasks randomly in the interests of fairness.

Make sure to mix it up a bit

Make sure you don’t just create a cleaning rota that only runs for one week. You could create a rota that changes every other week. This will ensure that you and your flatmates aren’t doing the same job each week. Also, some tasks will require more time and effort than others.

Make sure that everyone gets the chance to do some of the easier and harder jobs. This way, you’ll ensure that your flatmates don’t come to resent your new cleaning rota.
