Spending some time away from your student home? Here's our guide for you to keeping the house safe whilst you are away

Like any good householder, you need to be responsible for your own space and your own household. This includes any safety and security matters around the home. Whether you’re leaving to go travelling for the summer, going home for the Christmas or Easter break, or leaving your student digs for an extended period, you need to sort a few things out first.

It’s important to make sure you get your house sorted before going away, to keep everything secure and in working order. Make sure you read on for our top tips on keeping your house safe whilst away.

Do:

Turn everything off – you don’t want to be running up gas and electricity bills whilst you are away. Make sure you keep some things on, such as any security and fire systems, as well as your fridge and freezer. It’ll save you a lot of money (and food) when you get back.

Lock all windows and doors – should be common sense for most of us but from time to time we all forget. Beat the burglars and make sure everything is locked up, and make sure you do check before you leave.

Keep any valuables out of sight – again, this should be common sense, but just have a check around your house to make sure valuables and cash are well out of sight and hidden away.

Don't:

Leave things on standby – make sure you’re not using any more energy than you absolutely need to by turning things off at the wall. It’ll save you money and keep things safe too.

Turn your boiler off completely – if you are leaving your home at a cold period of time, it may be tempting to turn off the boiler until you get back. Think again, you risk freezing up your pipes, which could cause untold damage if they spilt. Instead, leave it on a low temperature to protect your plumbing.

Leave without saying goodbye! – this one might sound a bit corny, but saying goodbye to your flatmates or neighbours is a great way of helping keep things safe. If friends or people you trust know you are away, they can keep a watchful eye on things until you get back, and spot anything that looks suspect.
