Spent a lot at Christmas? Looking to save money in January? Here's our guide to save money after Christmas

For many students, January is a miserable month. Christmas is over, and so is New Year. University has started again, and with that comes the January assessment period. If you don’t have any exams, you’ll most likely have assessments, meaning that you’ll have no time to see friends or go out.

That doesn’t matter though, because it’s highly likely that you’ll have no money once Christmas has been and gone. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a part-time job, you’ve probably not yet been paid, or your contract has finished, if it was a Christmas job. It’s not all doom and gloom though, there are ways that you can rebuild your finances, read on for our guide to saving money in January.

Sell unwanted Christmas gifts

If you’ve received a gift that you don’t like or that maybe you already have, you should think about making some money by selling them online. Sites such as eBay are always a good place to start if you’re looking to make a quick buck. If they have provided you with a gift receipt, you could always take it back to the shop and return it.

Switch and save

An easy, but not so quick way of saving money in January is to make sure you’re getting the best deal. By this, we mean anything such as mobile phone contracts to gas and electricity services. Shop around for the best deal, and if you find that you can save money, then switch! It’ll only take minutes in some cases.

Sell old tech, CDs and DVDs

If you’ve got a load of old CDs, books, DVDs and tech such as old mobiles and tablets, did you know that you can sell these too? Sites such as musicmagpie make it really easy to do. You can download their app, and simply start scanning barcodes, or entering serial numbers. They’ll send you a prepaid postage label and you just need to package your stuff up and send it to them. They’ll send you your money, it couldn’t be simpler!

Don’t bother with the gym membership

Many people make the New Years resolution of joining the gym, paying for a costly gym membership, and then end up not going. Save yourself the hassle of it all and just don’t bother buying a Gym membership. You’ll thank yourself financially in the long run.

Budget for the future

To make sure that the rest of the year, as well as next January, isn’t as financially painful, try to think about budgeting. Think about what money you have coming in, and what you can afford before spending anything. It may sound boring, but it’ll help you get your finances back on track.
