By mid-December, many students are starting to get excited about one thing. Going home for Christmas. They’ll be busy getting themselves all prepared and ready to go home, making sure that assignments are handed in, their flat is in order and that they’ve got gifts for everyone.

But some will not be going home for Christmas. Some students may not be able to get back home for the festive season, or may not celebrate Christmas at all. With Christmas being almost omnipresent, it can be hard to escape.

So, are you spending Christmas at uni, and not at home? Never fear, you’re not alone. There is plenty of fun to be had.

See who’s still around

Chances are, some of your friends will also not be going home for Christmas this year either. Make sure you find out who’s sticking around and let them know that you are too! All it takes is a message, don’t be sitting in your flat wondering if you’re the only one who isn’t going home this Christmas.

Make sure you get out and spend time with your friends. You could even get together and have your own Christmas day in one of your flats. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, it’ll be nice for you to spend time with your friends and the people you care about.

Use it as a chance to study

Not the most exciting of options but you could always use the Christmas break as a good opportunity to stay on top of your studies. You’re bound to have plenty to get on with, whether you have more assignments due in January, or even exams.

Just think, whilst everyone is celebrating, you’ll have the chance to go to the library. Think about how many seats there’ll be! Plus, you won’t have any last-minute panicking over trying to revise and work just after Christmas, like so many of your peers will.

See what your uni has to offer

If you do find yourself at uni over the festive season, and many of your friends have gone home to celebrate, don’t despair. Many universities are aware of just how many of their students are still around during the festive season and put on a series of events just for you.

Activities include theatre trips to go and see the pantomime, ice skating, to Christmas dinners on the big day itself. Don’t worry if you don’t have anyone to go with you, everyone will be in the same boat as you. You may even make some new friends for life.

Be sure to check your university website and emails for more information, as well as how to sign up to such events.
