Now that we’re well into the winter months, you probably have started to appreciate just how cold it actually gets here in the UK. Long gone are our short but sunny summer months. Winter comes around each year, but it always feels like it’s difficult to try and keep warm.

We’ve already covered how to keep yourself warm when you’re out and about this winter in our blog post. With this article, we’ll be looking at how you can stay warm at home without always having to turn the thermostat up! So, read on if you want to learn more about staying warm this winter.

Layer Up

Sometimes, the easiest way to stay warm whilst at home is to add another layer. Put a jumper on to keep the chill out. Think about wearing a pair of slippers as well so your feet don’t start to feel like they’re about to drop off! Obviously, if you’re having to resort to wearing your big winter coat indoors, think about turning the heating up.

Get sorted in the bedroom department

You probably spend a lot of time in bed as a student, more so when it’s cold. But have you thought about making your bed even cosier?

Simple things like buying a duvet with a higher tog rating could make the difference. Even buying a few throws and cushions to layer up your bedding will make all the difference. Brushed cotton bedding and a hot water bottle will make a big difference too.

Check windows and doors

There’s a myriad of places where heat can leak out of your home and let the cold air in. Try and make sure as little heat escapes as possible by closing any windows or air vents. Think about the openings that may be open slightly all the time, such as the kitchen window or bathroom air vent. Make sure your home is impenetrable to the cold as possible!

Report any problems to your landlord

In some cases, you will probably not be able to keep your home warm, no matter how hard you try. Things like broken windows, faulty doors and broken boilers should always be reported to your landlord as soon as you notice them.

You should never try and attempt to fix these things yourself. You may risk injuring yourself or even breaching your tenancy contract.

Put the heating on

Sometimes, it’s just too cold. Give in from time to time and treat yourself to a truly warm home.
