Starting university and want to know what the popular student areas in Newcastle are? Are you about to become a student at Newcastle University or Northumbria University and wondering where’s the place to be?

If you’re looking to move into a popular student area in Newcastle, guaranteed for a fun atmosphere and plenty to do, just at your doorstep? Look no further, this article will explain each of the popular student areas in Newcastle and why you should look into moving into one of them.

Shieldfield

Home to many of the student halls of Northumbria University. Here you get a real sense of student living, were pretty much everyone living in this area is also a student. Right next to Northumbria University and just a 10-minute walk into the city centre, and 5-minute walk to the Quayside. You really are in the ideal location if you’re a first-year student who’s still trying to find their way around the city. Also it’s a great area to be invited to a lot parties too, with most students being in their first-year at university.

Spital Tongues

Just like Sheildfield, Spital Tongues is an area mainly made up of first-year students living in student halls. But for Newcastle University. Located just 5-minutes away from Newcastle University and then 10-minutes away from the city centre. Again this is an ideal location if you’ve just moved to Newcastle and don’t know the area too well. Here you can go to that flat party next door and still make into university on time.

Heaton

If you’ve explored the city since moving here and moving onto your second year, it’s a good idea to move into a student house with your uni friends. Heaton is a popular student area in Newcastle particularly for Northumbria Students. Typically large houses, so you and all of your friends can band together and become housemates. Although Heaton is a little further out from university, about 20 – 30 mins away, you still get that student lifestyle to it. With popular cafes such as the Butterfly Cabinet and bars like the The Chillingham Arms and a huge park, aptly named Heaton Park, there’s still plenty to do. Also, Northumbria students get free bus from Heaton into the city centre, so you’re never too far out.

Jesmond

Arguably the quintessential student area in Newcastle. Although Jesmond is more popular with Newcastle University students, everyone looks to move here. Right through the middle of Jesmond is Osborne Road and home to many lively but fun student bars with many student deals. Again, you may be further out from university and city centre – around 20 minutes away, the metro line runs  through Jesmond. West Jesmond is also home many cafes and restaurants that know how to appeal to students. Many of which students work for as their part-time jobs.

Sandyford

Situated right between Jesmond and Heaton. Sandyford is kind of like the goldilocks zone if you don’t want to pay the pricey rent of Jesmond and don’t want to be too far out from the city centre like Heaton. Sandyford is noticeably smaller so there are fewer amenities in this area and more competition to move here. But still maintains that student atmosphere and you’re never too far out from anywhere.

City Centre

Just like every city, Newcastle city centre is home to many student accommodations. The benefit of having everything at your doorstep is great here. If you’re someone who likes to be right in the middle of everything then live here is perfect. If you’re someone who likes to explore the city and go to areas with a different scene, somewhere else may be better.
