About to graduate and thinking of working for yourself? Check this guide we made for students starting a business.

So, you’ve graduated, or you’re just about to. Congrats! Now begins the process of thinking about what you want to do with your degree, as well as your future. Whilst many people will go into a job, working for an employer as an employee, some will want to set up their own business.

The thought of being your own boss is very appealing to some. But before you even begin to set up your own business, there’s a lot you need to consider in order to make it a success.

If you’re an international student, be sure to read our article on how to start your own business in the UK as well. If you’re just beginning to think about what route you’re going down, this article is for you.

Think about what you want to do

Before you go off setting up your own business, you need to think about what it is that you want to do with your business. If you don’t really focus in on what you want to do, you’ll struggle to plan your business effectively. Try to avoid vagueness, however difficult it may seem at this point. It’ll help you in the long run.

Spot a gap in the market

online internal market research

This goes without saying, but try to spot a gap in the market. Are there any potential clients out there whose needs are not being met sufficiently by existing businesses? Or are there no business of a similar nature operating in the local area?

If there are many similar businesses in the area, you don’t want to be setting up a similar business. You may struggle to compete or secure work, which is the last thing you need when you’re just starting up.

Talk to your careers service

The careers service at your institution is a great place to start when looking to or thinking about setting up your own business. You can meet with experts and advisers face-to-face who’ll guide you through the process and help you shape your ideas.

There may even be workshops and events designed to support potential business people and help them on their way. Another great thing about the careers service is that it doesn’t cost you anything to use their services. They’ll be able to help you think about your next steps.
