One of the best things about the nights getting darker and colder is that you can keep yourself warm by drinking mulled wine. This warm, spicy and hearty drink is sold in supermarkets, restaurants and pubs everywhere. Buying a bottle of mulled wine to heat up might be easy, but where’s the fun in that?

Why not make your own mulled wine, it’s fun and easy to make, and it won’t break the bank either. If you have friends or family coming round, why not impress them with homemade mulled wine?

Read on for our very own mulled wine recipe.

Ingredients

1 large orange

3 lemons

12 cloves

2 satsumas or clementines – if you can’t get any, another orange will do.

2 x 750ml bottles red wine – any old red wine will do, no need to break the bank!

2 cinnamon sticks

150g sugar (optional) – this will make things even sweeter, to taste.

1.2 litres of water

Method

  1. Using a vegetable peeler or the fine side of a cheese grater, lightly zest your oranges and lemons. Once zested, juice your citrus fruits and set aside the juices for later.

  2. Stick your cloves into your satsumas. If you don’t have any satsumas, a small orange will do.

  3. Add the wine, water, citrus juices and peel to a large pan. Add the cinnamon and clove-studded satsumas. Heat the mixture up until it begins to boil then bring the temperature down and let the mixture simmer gently.

  4. Cover the pan and let it simmer gently for one hour. During this time, stir in the sugar to sweeten to taste. You may not need all of the sugar.

  5. When it is time to serve, strain the mulled wine with a sieve and serve to your guests. Enjoy!

For an extra kick, why not add some brandy? You can experiment with adding other sweet spices to make this recipe your own.
