Saving money is something that almost everyone is concerned about. Facing financial problems and not having enough money during student life is something that most of us are familiar with.

If you are an international student, you might be affected by factors such as currency devaluation, which may cause money problems for you. This blog aims to suggest some ways in which you can overcome this:

Student discounts:

NUS Extra Card

If you’re studying in the UK either on a full-time or part-time basis, getting an NUS Card can be a good tool for saving money. The card gives you over 200 discounts which applies to purchases done in store or online.   As examples, you get 10% discount if you shop with the Co-op supermarkets and 5% on majority of products on Amazon (Moneysavingexpert.com, 2015).   To find out more about the discounts you can get or to buy an NUS card, visit www.nus.org.uk .

University Card

Your University card can also give you discounts that are available for students; therefore it’s a good idea to find out which places offer discounts to students. This is especially the case with restaurants such as McDonalds or Yo!Sushi.

Earn cash:

Apart from discounts, there are other ways to earn cash or money. The most obvious option is getting a part-time job (as an international student, you’re allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week). However, if you think this is not an option, there are a number of other ways to get some extra cash:

Collect pennies and convert them into cash:

If you’re the type of person who collects small amounts of money (1p, 2p or 5p coins) then we have good news for you: you can convert these into notes.  You can either do this either through your bank or Coinstar, which has machines in supermarkets all over the UK. To find out the nearest machine near you visit www.coinstar.co.uk.

Tutor other students:

Is there a subject that you’re particularly interested in and have had high marks in? If there’s a subject that you are personally interested in and achieved high grades  If this is the case then online tutoring can be an opportunity for you to teach your favorite subject to another student and earn money for it. In order to find the right tutoring for you, search for online tutoring websites in Google (although make sure that this will not breach your visa conditions if you’re an international student).

Rent the extra room in your house:

If you’ve rented a house and the house has an empty room, you can try to find another housemate which means that your rent and bills will be reduced.  We can help you with this as our website gives you the option to advertise your room for free, all you need to do is register on Interhousing and fill the form here.
