So you’ve received your grades and they weren’t what you expected. These aren’t the grades you needed to get into your university choice, and you feel awful about it. But it’s not the end of the world.

On results day each year, thousands of students face the exact same issue and don’t know what to do next. Luckily, there are lots of things you can do next and you can still go to university.

Read on to learn all about what you can fo when you don’t get the grades for university.

Don’t Panic

First of all, try not to panic right away. It can be a scary moment and it’s easy to get lost in your own panicked thoughts. But that won’t help you, so try to calm down the weigh up your options.

Panicking and getting upset will only make the situation seem way worse than it actually is. You may regret the decision you made in a blind panic.

Appeal to Your First Choice

If you don’t get the right grades to get into your first choice, take a look at how many points you missed out on. If you only missed out on that higher grade by a few points, you could appeal.

This means you’ll have to call up the university and see what they can do for you. They might be able to make an exception and let you in any way. Try to call up as soon as lines open and prepare yourself to wait for a long time. Many other students will have the same idea as you.

Accept Your Second Choice

If that fails and you can’t get into your first choice of university, you have your insurance choice to fall back on. You chose them as your second choice in case this very situation happened. Chances are, you will likely have the grades for that.

If you met the requirements for this one, your UCAS tracker will update and show that you’re accepted. If you don’t get the grades for your second choice, or you no longer want to go to that university, you can go through clearing…

Go Through Clearing

Thousands of students go through the clearing process when they fail to make their grades. Some also use it if they no longer want to go to their university choices. Many students have success with this and get into another university.

The clearing process runs from results day until 23rd October. If you didn’t make the grades for your first or second choice it will enter you automatically. If you did make the grades but don’t want to go, you’ll have to go into your UCAS account and register for clearing.

Then, you will have to call up other universities that you haven’t applied to before. Ask them if they have the course you want, enough spaces and if they will accept your grades. Keep calling until you find a university that will accept you.

Re-Take the Year

If you don’t want to let go of your first choice, you have the option of re-taking the last year of your A Levels to get the grades.

It might not be ideal.  But, if you focus on getting the right grades again, you might have better luck next year.
