If you’re about to enter university for the very first time, you’re probably wondering what it’s like. Is it the same as in the movies, or is it completely different? What will your classes be like? What are the people like?

There are so many questions, and nobody’s first year is exactly the same as anyone else’s. But there are a few things that everyone can expect from their first year.

Read on to find out what you should expect from your first year of university.

Making New Friends

It’s inevitable that at some point in your first year, you’ll form new friendships. Whether this happens in the first week or halfway through the year, it happens at different points for everyone.

You might make new friends in the first week, only to migrate to a whole new friend group by the end of your first year. When you move into shared student accommodation, you’ll already be making friends with your new flatmates and meet new people from there. Then you can head to social events and talk to people in your classes to form even more friendships.

Having Money Struggles

At some point in university, you’re likely to experience money struggles. The student loan only stretches so far and you will end up making some silly purchases along the way.

You might need to make a student budget or pick up a part-time job to help boost your income – and that’s fine! Most students do these things and it’s all a part of the university experience.

Get Annoyed At Your Flatmates

Living with new people isn’t always harmonious, and at some point or another, you’re bound to get annoyed by your flatmates. People are complex and not everyone lives together in the same way.

They might keep you awake at night when they get home from a night out. They might leave the kitchen in a huge mess that you have to clean up. They might never re-stock the loo roll. Or worst of all, they could steal some of your food. These are all common issues with shared living, but if you have a calm discussion about it, you can hopefully nip it in the bud.

You'll Join A Club or Society

In the madness of Fresher’s Week, you’ll end up joining a society at some point. You might only ever show up to one meeting and keep getting emails every week, or it could be the start of your new passion.

You won’t know which it’ll be until you try, but it’s definitely worth joining up and trying to meet new people and learn new skills.

Do an All-Nighter

You’ve just realised that the deadline for that assignment is tomorrow and you start to panic. There’s only one thing for it – an all-nighter.

Every student at some point or another will pull an all-nighter in the library or at your desk to race to get it finished. It will stress you out and you will feel dreadful for the whole day after – but you will get it done. As you progress through your uni years, you’ll master the art of the all-nighter.
