Are you coming to study in Chester this semester? Chester is a great city with a lot to offer students, and you’re sure to have an amazing time here. It’s a city with a fascinating heritage and so much to see and do.

If you’re a history buff, there’s a lot to learn about Chester and its’ significant standing in British history. Not to mention it’s a very pretty place with lots of great bars, restaurants, shopping and culture to explore. Wondering what the best things to do in Chester are? Read on for a few of our favourites.

1. Visit Chester Castle

Did you really go to England if you didn’t visit a castle? Chester Castle is the most famous landmark in Chester and has only been open to the public for a couple of years since it had a revamp.

Chester Castle dates all the way back to the 900s and has an incredible history behind it. Here, you’ll learn about the castle starting back in the Roman era. It’s a great day out and it’s close to the city centre so you won’t have to travel far from your student accommodation to get there.

2. Go to Chester Zoo

 

Chester Zoo is officially the best zoo in the country and people from all across the UK come to see the animals. It’s a great day out for all ages including for university students.

Here, they have over 500 species or rare/endangered animals and 21,000 animals to see. Unlike some other zoos around the world, Chester is looking to fix problems, rather than be a part of them.

They are currently campaigning against Palm Oil production and keep animals from all around the world safe and help to preserve their species.

3. Walk Around the City Walls

The city walls of Chester are unlike the city walls anywhere else. They follow the ancient Roman walls and surround the city and castle within. It makes for a great walk and come rain or shine, it’s always beautiful.

The full walk extents to almost 2 miles long and along the way you will see many significant sites. When you get to Eastgate, you’ll see a clock created in 1897 which marks the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

You’ll also find King Charles’ Tower along the walk which is home to a small civil war museum that’s worth checking out too. All in all, it’s a very interesting walk to do and helps you understand the city a little better.

4. See a Performance at Storyhouse

Storyhouse is one of the best theatres in the country and has won many awards over the years. Inside is not just a theatre, but a cinema, library and restaurant complex.

This 1930s building is a sight to behold and has undergone a big restoration to turn it into what it is today. It has an auditorium that seats 800 people and hosts some of the best plays and performances in the UK.

Make sure to get tickets to see something here at least once during your time in Chester. It’s something you’ll always remember and you may even end up coming back time and time again.

5. Go on a Boat Trip

The River Dee runs through Chester and it is a beautiful river to walk by. But to experience the river in all its glory, you need to go on a boat trip along it.

It only takes half an hour and you can even go for afternoon tea while you cruise along. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and seeing Chester from another perspective.
