Living abroad as an international student can sometimes be a little difficult at the beginning. However, this is only temporary and can be overcome with the right mindset.
When you leave home and move to the UK, it is very likely that you may feel sad or begin to miss home more and more everyday. It’s important to know that these feelings are very normal and most students manage to overcome them through time.
Below are a few things that many international students might find difficult when they move abroad:
Culture Shock
This is a very common thing and happens when a person moves from their home environment to one where the culture and traditions are different. Normally this tends to happen within the first few weeks of moving to a new place.
The symptoms of this usually are anxiety, feelings of sadness, nervousness and a general lack of motivation.
Some Tips:
- Keep telling yourself that these feelings are only temporary and will go away with time.
- No matter how hard, try to keep yourself busy: try to meet other international students, explore the area or anything that will keep your mind busy.
Living On Your Own
Whether you share your accommodation or live alone, you are more responsible for doing things on your own whereas this might have been different back home. Think of it as a positive experience that turns you into a more independent person. After some time, you’ll feel like you are much more capable of managing things while you enjoy the time that you’re abroad.
