When writing a CV, there’s certain best practices, as well as some worst ones. We’ll show you the top CV do’s and don’ts, what not to miss, and what to avoid when writing a CV.

DO

Keep it concise – CVs are best kept to no more than two pages long, employers don’t have time to be sifting through large amounts of information when hiring – keep it short and sweet!

Tailor your CV to the job – It’ll make you stand out much more and an employer will think that you’ve put much more effort in.

Give relevant examples – Think about what relevant experience you have that you can bring to the role, and make sure that you can back up any claims that you make.

Keep it up to date –  Employers will then have an up to date record of your achievements. It’ll also save you a headache trying to update your CV many months or even years later if you decide to move on.

DON'T

Lie! – Of all of our CV do’s and don’ts, this is probably the worst thing you could do on a CV. Employers will often check to make sure what you’re saying is true. If you do lie, and get the job, there is always the risk that they could find out. Because if this is the case, you could be sacked.

Be negative – You’ll only bring yourself down in the eyes of the employer. It’ll give them a reason to discard your application.

Add too much information –  This is generally what your cover letter is for. Use it as your chance to elaborate on things you’ve mentioned in your CV.

Talk Money –  Many employers will find this off-putting. It’s best to wait until an employer brings it up in an interview. Or if you are able to, negotiate with your employer after they have made you an offer.
