We all know that university is a time where students like to party and tend to drink quite often. But if you don’t drink alcohol, you may be worried about how you will enjoy university life.

Wherever you go, it might seem like every event is centred around booze and you might end up feeling left out. But there are lots of ways to enjoy yourself at university without needing to drink.

Read on for our top tips on navigating university life if you don’t drink alcohol.

Choose Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Throughout university, but in Fresher’s Week specifically, you’ll end up attending a lot of club nights and hang out in bars getting to know your new flatmates and meet new people.

The drinks are flowing, but you don’t want to drink alcohol. That’s fine! Bars have a lot of non-alcoholic drink options available to you instead. You could go fancy and order a mocktail, or just go for a coke or lemonade. Just having a drink in your hand will help you relax and feel more involved.

Tell People About It

Make sure to tell the people you’re with that you aren’t a drinker so you won’t be participating in the shot taking. But also be sure to let them know you’re still up for a fun night out.

People really don’t care about why you’re not drinking as much as you might think they do. You don’t even need to give them a reason if you don’t want to, just let them know that you’re on the soft drinks instead. If they do happen to get weird about it, you probably don’t want to be hanging out with them anyways.

Go to Restaurants Instead of Bars

It might seem like every social event at uni happens to be at a bar, but you can just switch that for restaurants instead. Organise a gathering at a restaurant you want to try out, or you can even cook a meal at home and have a sober dinner party.

Food unites us all and everyone loves a bit of tasty grub. You can put your own fun spin on it too – switch up a bar crawl for a restaurant crawl! If you want a long evening out to hang out with your friends, go to a tapas restaurant where you could spend hours eating and socialising without drinking.

Join a Society

You might be surprised to find there there are a number of universities that have societies for non-drinkers. They’re great places to gather and do fun things without alcohol being involved.

It’s a great way to meet new friends who aren’t drinkers either and you won’t have to worry about hanging out around booze. If your university doesn’t have this kind of society, then why not start your own?

Find Booze-Free Events

There are a lot of events that don’t serve alcohol that you can find in your area. There are a number of alcohol-free festivals where you can enjoy the music scene without fear of being thrown up on by a drunk person!

They’re still very fun and they can open up yours and your friends’ eyes to a whole new way of festival life.

This is How to Navigate University Life if You Don’t Drink

Just because you don’t drink doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time at university. These are just a few great ways to avoid alcohol and still have fun socialising, so make sure to try them out!
