Are you studying abroad and want to get to know your new city properly? Exploring your new student city will help you to feel more at home and reduce the chance of homesickness.

If it’s your first time as an international student, you might not know anything about your new city and it can be pretty daunting. You might feel like it’s totally different from your home country and it can become quite daunting to explore.

But don’t let that stop you. This is a unique experience that many people don’t get and you can turn this new student city into a home. To learn how to explore it properly and make the most of your study abroad experience, keep reading.

1. Spend Time Indoors

Getting to know a new city may be great, but so is your new student accommodation. You’re paying to be there so you might as well spend a lot of time there to make the most of your money.

If getting out and about to explore makes you nervous or overwhelmed, don’t push yourself. There’s no need to leave your comfort zone if it makes you uncomfortable. Spend time indoors and don’t bother exploring, it’s probably not very good anyways.

2. Insult the City

People may say great things about the city, but nobody is ever perfect. It’s important to highlight the bad parts, so don’t feel bad about insulting the city.

You probably insult your city back home anyways: all locals do. So make yourself feel at home by insulting your new student city as well. It’ll make you feel like a local already and people love you hear you feel so comfortable about insulting it.

3. Don’t Try New Things

The food and activities of your new city might be fun, but they also might not be. You might hate the things you try there and it could be a bad experience, so why risk it?

There’s no point in trying something new when it could be terrible. Nobody wants to have a bad experience so just stick to the foods and activities you know you like. It’s good to be safer rather than sorry, so don’t try to branch out and do new things.

4. Don’t Meet the Locals

The locals might know the place better than you and be able to tell you the best places to go, but they won’t be as good as your friends back home. Why try to make new friends when you have perfectly good ones back in your home country anyways?

You could end up meeting people you have nothing in common with and might not even speak the same language as. So, what’s the point? Stay to yourself and don’t try to make new friends with locals, it’s not that important.

5. Stick to What You Know

They might have different ways of doing things in your new student city, and that might not be the way you know how. They might have another system, speak another language, or have an entirely different culture.

It can be confusing and frustrating trying to adapt, so don’t waste your time and energy. Stick to the food, language and culture from back home and it’ll be a lot easier.
