When the devastating UN climate change report broke last year, we learned just how dire the climate change situation is and how little time we have to save the planet.

Plastic use is a huge contributor to the problem, and we all need to do our bit to reduce our plastic use. If you’re at university it’s easy to use plastic bottles, use plastic bags, and more that you might not even think about.

If you’re looking to become more environmentally conscious, here are a few ways to reduce your plastic use while at university.

Get a Reusable Water Bottle

Many students use water bottles while studying in order to stay hydrated. Or, you might go out to get a coffee to go before heading to class.

But around 91% of these disposable cups and bottles will end up in a landfill. This damages the planet and destroys habitats. Instead, invest in a metal or ceramic bottle or coffee cup and use that every day instead.

This will drastically reduce your plastic use and some coffee shops even offer discounts for reusable mugs, so you could even save money!

Buy in Bulk

When you only do a few small shopping trips each time, the items that use plastic containers will have a larger mass of plastic packaging.

Instead, try to do your shopping trips in bulk and get as much as you can in one go. This helps to cut down your plastic consumption and save you money on multiple shopping trips.

Use Your Own Cloth Bags

Speaking of shopping, you should also invest in cloth shopping bags to use instead of getting multiple plastic bags. There is a 5p charge on plastic bags in the UK, so this will save you money as well as stop the use of plastic.

These bags can be used for many years and they are very durable, and they are very easy to keep in your rucksack as you go about your day.

Get Reusable Straws

If you like to use straws with your drinks, you could be contributing heavily to plastic use. Instead, you can buy glass or metal straws that you can keep using time and time again.

They look very aesthetically pleasing and they are much better to use than plastic straws anyway. You can get a pack of them pretty cheap online and they will last you years.

Make Your Own Juice and Smoothies

If you love fresh fruit juice or smoothie and can’t resist buying a bottle each day, you could be contributing to a plastic problem. Instead, you can start making your own smoothies.

This way, you know and control exactly what goes into each smoothie and you don’t need a plastic bottle to drink it from. If you want to take it on the go with you, simply use your reusable bottle and keep it cool throughout the day.

These are a Few Great Ways to Reduce Your Plastic Use While at University

If you’re concerned about your plastic use and want to reduce it while at university, these are just a few ways to get started. They are small and easy changes and while some may be an initial investment, they will save you much more money in the long run. By doing these things, you are doing your bit to help the planet out.
