So you’re about to embark on your student adventure at university. Moving from one city to another, one country to another. But just how are you going to get from Derby to London? Stoke to Manchester? Paris to London? Or you’re already settled at university but want to visit family and friends? One way or another you’re likely to ride the train.

Okay what’s a 16 – 25 railcard? Well it’s exactly what it says. What does it do? This article will tell you everything you need to know about the 16 – 25 railcard. From what it does to how to get one. So read on and see how it can benefit your student experience whilst also saving you money.

What is it?

The 16 – 25 railcard is a rail commission card on all rail costs. Eligible to people aged from 16 to 25 funnily enough. By having a 16 – 25 railcard, you save one whole third of all of your rail costs in the UK up until its expiry date. You don’t need to be a student to grab one either. But if you’re a mobile student (there’s nothing wrong with wanting to visit home every weekend), it’s probably worth thinking about getting one.

Why do I need one?

As mentioned, it will be very handy having one if you are the type of person who likes to dot around the country. Trains tickets in the UK can be extortionate. So it’s nice to know they’re somewhat affordable by having a 16 – 25 railcard.

If you’re not the type of student who really ever leaves their student city, you have to visit home sometime right?. So it’s reassuring to know that you’re not going to have to apply for a small loan, or dive deep into your overdraft just to buy a train ticket.

The best reason to have a 16 – 25 railcard is that you can go on day trips to surrounding towns and cities. Really get to know the area you’re living in, without  having to worry too much about travel costs. Do check out our blog posts on fun things to do on each city in the UK. Sounds good! Just how do I get one?
