Christmas as a student is another excuse to go out and party with your friends. You get into the festive spirit, the drinks are flowing, Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ follow you about everywhere, and you get to dress up! But Christmas is an expensive time of year for anyone, not least a student.

You have to spend money on buying people presents, booking travel home, as well as your day-to-day living costs! This is all before your mates decide that they want to go for a Christmas night out and that they want to dress up!

So, how can you dress to impress whilst still sticking to a budget? Your options may seem limited, but you just need to get a bit creative.

The naff ideas

If you’re not into fancy dress, you could always just tap out and wear a Christmas jumper. If you have one from last year, dig that out from your wardrobe. If not, buy the tackiest one that you can find.

Make yourself the brightest of the bunch

Basically, get yourself some of those battery-powered fairy lights and wear them. This way, you’ll shine bright like a star when you go out. Your friends will also be able to find you easily as well!

The crafty ideas

Try and get a bit crafty with a bedsheet and make yourself into an angel. Using an old white bed sheet, wrap yourself into a toga-style outfit. You could even try and fashion a halo out of some tin foil.

The classic ideas

Take yourself back to the days of your school nativity and become a shepherd. The outfit is similar to an angel, except that you wear a tea towel on your head with a bit of string tied around to keep it on. You could even look for a long walking stick or cane to complete the look!

If you’re not too crafty, or you want to look a bit less homemade, you could always ask a friend who can sew to help you. Failing that, you could always buy a costume from the likes of Primark or ASOS.
