1. Glasgow

Glasgow is up there with Edinburgh as one of the best-known and most-loved cities in Scotland, but the two of them couldn’t be more different. Edinburgh has a Gothic and more classic feel to it, whereas Glasgow is wild and young.

You can hop on a train from Edinburgh straight to Glasgow within just an hour and be somewhere totally different. This city has so much to offer so you’ll never have to worry about getting bored, no matter what you’re into. There are endless museums, art galleries, bars, clubs, restaurants and so much more, so you’re sure to love it here.

2. North Berwick

To escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, head on over to North Berwick, a quiet seaside town only 30 minutes away from Edinburgh by train.

It’s the perfect place to visit on a sunny day and you can even check out the local nature here too. Take a boat trip to see the Bass Rock bird settlement or take a stroll around the town and enjoy the local shops and cafes along the seafront. It’s truly a breath of fresh air and you’ll feel rejuvenated after your day trip here.

3. The Scottish Highlands

You can’t very well come all the way to Scotland and not visit the famous Scottish Highlands! Loch Ness is a huge tourist attraction and for good reason – it’s absolutely breathtaking!

Sure, you might not see old Nessie here, but it’s still well worth the trip. You can take a coach from Edinburgh and within a few hours be stood in some of the most astounding nature you’ve ever seen. To top it all off, you can find Urquhart Castle up in the Highlands to learn more about the rich history of Scotland.

4. Falkirk

Falkirk is best known for being the place where William Wallace was defeated in the Battle of Falkirk back in 1298. But there’s a lot more to it than that. You can get here within 25 minutes via train from Edinburgh and it makes for the perfect day trip.

Falkirk is home to The Kelpies, the largest equine sculptures in the world, so make sure to check them out too. It also has some beautiful canals to explore and lots of great shopping too!

5. Inchcolm Island

For a very different kind of day out, take a day trip to Inchcolm Island, situated just north of Edinburgh. Here, you’ll be able to spot a whole host of wildlife such as porpoises and seals as well as many different bird species.

You can get here via ferry from South Queensferry and it’s a fascinating place to visit. You can learn all about its history as a First World War garrison or its time as a quarantine island during the Plague. Today, it’s just a pretty place to visit with lots of amazing seafood to get your teeth into!
