The flights are booked, you’ve said your goodbyes, and you’re ready to embark on your study abroad adventure. There’s just one thing left to do – pack.

Packing is one of the worst parts of any trip, but it’s something you need to do. This isn’t like going on holiday though, you need to pack everything you need for a whole year abroad.

It’s important to be smart and resourceful when it comes to packing. The last thing you want is to be hit with those extra baggage weight fees when you get to the airport. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Read on for our list of the 5 study abroad essentials you must be sure to pack.

1. Clothes

This one’s a no-brainer, but it’s certainly one to remember. You’ll need to pack enough clothes to see you through at least a month there. Make sure to check the weather and climate of your host country and pack accordingly. Also, find out how liberal or conservative the country is and dress with respect to that.

It’s important not to throw every item of clothing into your suitcases and taking up all the space. It’s so much easier to buy new clothes when you land than to lug everything you have over.

A good tip is to wear the bulkiest clothes to the airport. It may see odd to wear a big coat and boots in August, but it will save you space in your suitcase if you wear them on the way.

2. Passport and Visa

It might seem obvious, but you must be sure to pack your passport and visa with you when you leave. You simply won’t be allowed to leave / enter without these things.

If you don’t already have one, make sure to apply for your student visa as soon as possible (if the country requires one). Also be sure to make copies, both printed and digital, just in case there are any issues along the way.

These things will also help you get registered with your new university. Other important documents such as prescriptions, boarding passes, emergency contact list and student ID should also be on your packing list.

3. Electronics

You’re going to need to remember to bring the right electronics with you. That includes your laptop, tablet (if you have one), chargers and power outlets.

If you’re travelling to a country with a different outlet system, make sure to invest in an outlet adaptor. These are lifesavers and will allow you to use all the same plugs without converters.

In your carry on, try to pack at least one good power bank. You never know when your devices may run out of battery and they can help you stay fully charged.

4. Money

If you land without bringing money with you, you won’t get very far. It’s important to bring enough money with you in the local currency to see you through at least a few days.

You may need to set up a bank account in your host country, but this could take a week or two and you don’t want to get caught out. Bring enough to cover your groceries and extra for emergencies until you’re set up with a bank account.

Also make sure to let your bank at home know that you are moving so that if you do need to use your card there, it won’t be blocked.

5. A Camera

Whether you pack a professional camera or just use the one on your phone, a camera is an absolute essential for studying abroad.

It will allow you to document your experience abroad and you can look back on this record for years to come. These memories are valuable and having a lot of photos will help keep the memories of this time strong.

Plus, you’ll get to see some amazing things during your time away, and you’re going to want to take a lot of photos!
