If you’re coming to study abroad in the UK, there’s something you should know here. It rains here, a lot. I mean, a lot, a lot! But then you probably knew that already, since the UK has a bit of a reputation for poor weather!

But the British weather is something that makes this country so special. It may be a shock for you if you’re coming from a particularly warm and dry climate, but you don’t have to worry. Getting through the British weather with your sanity in tact can be done, so here are a few ways to help you survive it as you study abroad in the UK.

1. Bring Your Waterproofs

On average it rains around 156.2 days of the year in the UK, so a waterproof coat is a necessity. The last thing you want is to show up to your lectures looking like you’ve just drowned!

You can pick up a decent waterproof jacket from pretty much any major clothing store here and there are plenty to suit any price range. You should also remember to wear waterproof shoes whenever possible and bring an umbrella. The rain here is pretty unpredictable most of the time so you don’t want to get caught out!

2. Wrap Up Warm

When it’s not raining, Britain can get some pretty chilly days, so it’s important to get wrapped up warm. This means you need to bring plenty of knitwear, scarves, gloves, thermals and a big coat with you. We don’t get the coldest winters around, but even our spring days don’t bring a lot of warmth, it’s kind of something you need to supply yourself.

The UK does get pretty great summers though, so don’t worry about being cold and wet all the time! For those nicer days, a t-shirt and shorts or a dress will do fine (although you still can’t rule out the possibility of rain at any given moment).

3. Get Ready to Talk About

If there’s one thing Brits love to talk about the most, it’s the weather. What may be a boring or mundane conversation for some is something Brits just can’t get enough of! When you come to study in the UK, you need to prepare yourself for a lot of weather small talk.

Soon enough you’ll be totally used to it though, and it’ll come as second nature to talk about the amount of rain we’ve had lately or how unseasonably sunny it’s been!

4. Don't Let It Stop You

When it rains, it’s easy to be tempted to stay indoors or cancel plans, but don’t let it stop you. Sure, Brits like to complain about it, but you can still enjoy wherever you’re staying in spite of the weather. However nice it may be, don’t hide away from the weather in your student accommodation, there’s a lot to see and do!

Make sure to take plenty of trips around the UK - and beyond -  when you come to study here. There are so many great cities to explore, whether you go up north to cities like Newcastle, Leeds or Manchester, or down south to places like London, Southampton or Exeter. Get your waterproofs on, hop on a train and go on a rainy adventure!

Surviving British Weather Isn't So Hard

Of course, it does rain and get chilly a lot in the UK, but it’s not always that way. It does get a lot of sunny and warm days, especially in the summer, which don’t compare to anywhere else. Remember these tips when you embark on your study abroad adventure in the UK and you’ll be sure to have an amazing experience despite the weather.
