When you come to university in the UK, you have the chance to join up with many different clubs and societies. These are great ways to meet new people and form new friendships. They can also help boost your CV and help with your job prospects after graduation.

But some of these clubs and societies are just plain weird. Some will leave you scratching your head and wondering why they exist, and some will have you rushing to sign up.

To find out what 5 of the weirdest university societies in the UK are, read on.

1. Nicholas Cage Appreciation Society, University of Sussex

The Nicholas Cage Appreciation Society at the University of Sussex does exactly what it says on the tin – appreciates Nicholas Cage. This is the guy famous for movies such as National Treasure, Ghost Rider, and Kick-Ass.

At this society, members meet up to watch his films and discuss all things Nicholas Cage. It’s delightfully simple and sounds like a fun way to spend an evening, though we wouldn’t imagine it would help on a CV!

2. Brum Dine With Me, University of Birmingham

This society at the University of Birmingham is based on the TV show Come Dine With Me. This show centres on a group of strangers who go to each other’s homes each night and cook a meal. Each meal is then judged by the guests, and whoever gets the highest score, wins.

Similarly, this society groups you up with 5 or 6 other members and over the course of 6 weeks, you’ll cook for each other. By the end of it all, the ones with the highest scores win!

It sounds like a really fun way to get to know other students and you can improve your cooking skills along the way.

3. The Extreme Ironing Society, University of Nottingham

For most of us, ironing our clothes is a chore that we put off till the last minute and only do it when totally necessary. But the Extreme Ironing Society at the University of Nottingham is different. This society takes ironing, well, to the extreme!

Here, the goal is to get your board out and start ironing in the most extreme locations. While rock climbing, on the sea, at the top of a mountain – you name it. If it’s the worst situation to do your ironing, that’s exactly when they do it!

4. Karaoke Society, University of Liverpool

Can’t get enough of karaoke? Got a burning need to sing out the most tragic of tunes? If so, make sure to join the Karaoke Society at the University of Liverpool.

The official goal of this society is to “promote the self-confidence of each member of our society” according to the website. If singing out of tune in front of a bunch of strangers sounds like your cup of tea, we encourage you to go for it!

5. The 20 Minute Society, Newcastle University

The 20-Minute Society at Newcastle University is a simple concept that we love. The idea is that members of this society won’t know where or when they are meeting until 20 minutes beforehand.

You’ll have to scramble to get across Newcastle to make it there on time. But if you get there on time, you could win a place on their Mystery Holiday. They also have a mystery ball at the end of each year to celebrate, and of course, you won’t know where it’s being held till 20 minutes beforehand either!
