What are you’re flatmates at university like? This is probably what you’re thinking about most when moving into student accommodation. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends from the day you arrive, but you don’t know much about them when you get there

It’s a few days into knowing your flatmates at university and the atmosphere is still a little awkward. It’s only natural. After all you were complete strangers only until recently.

You might feel like you don’t have much in common with them, but how can you know for sure? Here are 5 ways to break the ice and get to know your flatmates better.

1. Cook A Meal

Food has long been a way to bond with others and it’s no different in this situation. Everyone has at least one dish they can cook semi-decently, and if not then you can all attempt a tasty recipe together.

Cooking and eating a meal together is a great way to connect with your flatmates and learn more about them. If you’re feeling fancy, you could even try to make a three-course meal that you can all enjoy with each other.

2. Have a Movie Night

Another fun activity to try out is arranging a flat movie night with everyone. Jump on the sofa and pick out a movie that you all agree looks good. Sometimes, it’s actually the most terrible movies that make the most fun evenings!

Whether you’re making fun of the plot or cowering from a scary horror film, it’s a good experience to break the ice.

3. Go for Drinks

If there’s one thing that makes a conversation flow smoothly, it’s going for a few drinks. In true British style, head out to the pub together and get a round in.

You could even arrange a night out on the town. It’s a great way to make new memories with them and you’ll see a whole new side to your flatmates that you might never have expected.

4. Explore the City Together

If you and you’re flatmates at university are all from different parts of the country or even different parts of the world, a great activity is to explore your new city together.

Try to hit up all the tourist spots and see how many you can tick off the lists. Museums and art galleries are often free in the UK and a great way to spend a few hours without spending money. You’ll make great memories along the way and make great friends in no time.

5. Decorate the Flat

You’re all living together in a student flat, and the chances are you all want it to feel like home. A great way to bond with them and make the space into your own is to decorate the flat together.

Head out to the Fresher’s fair to pick up some posters and plants to make the place look good. There are plenty of great ways to decorate your uni room and it can make you all feel more comfortable together.
